The project, which is based at the Research Centre, will for the first time analyse the extensive corpus of pharmaceutical historical sources from the Francke Foundations with regard to alchemical practice and its argumentative embedding in Pietism. This includes numerous handwritten sources as well as partly rare alchemical printed materials from the early modern period.
National and international young academics and established researchers from various disciplines work at the Francke Foundations every year thanks to the scholarship programme.
Digitisation, indexing and editing projects are being carried out, in part with cooperation partners and within the framework of third-party funding. They serve as a basis for own academic research projects and invite external scholars to study the unique sources.
Academic cooperation links the Francke Foundations with partner institutions and scholars from various disciplines all over the world.
With the eighth and final index volume now available, the research and editing project »Halle Pastors in Pennsylvania, 1740-1820,« funded by the German Research Foundation and based at the Study Center, has reached its conclusion. The source material, published for the first time by the Francke Foundations, consists of curricula vitae, official diaries and letters and provides deep insights into the faith, emotions and thoughts of the authors, shows their certainty of faith and also their doubts about faith and gives insights into the work of the congregation, but also into the reality of life in North America in the 18th century, which contrasts strongly with the completely different conditions in Germany and Europe. Thus, these documents represent an extremely important source for research, which is now available for the first time completely annotated and commented as well as made accessible by detailed indexes.
The Francke Foundations have two unique collections: the Historical Library and the cultural-historical Archive. The collections are comprehensively indexed and accessible online.
