The Three Brushstrokes – an Illustrated art Crime Story

On Monday, 23 April 2018, the project »The Three Brushstrokes - an Illustrated Art Crime Story« was launched at the August Hermann Francke day nursery of the Francke Foundations as part of the programme "Kultur macht stark. Alliances for Education" programme funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the project »The Three Brushstrokes - An Illustrated Art Thriller«. The aim was to give children from different backgrounds access to their environment through artistic means. The initiator of the project and cooperation partner of the educators of the Francke Foundations is the Kulturwerk Bildender Künstler Sachsen-Anhalt e.V. The KinderKunstForum is responsible for the conception and implementation of the content.

More than half of the pupils looked after in the children's facility live in a family that is anchored in a different culture. They live in the city centre of Halle, in Glaucha south of the market square. The project »The Three Brushstrokes - an Illustrated Art Thriller« aimed to provide them with access to what is often a new and foreign environment for them in Germany. Until March 2019, the artists Josefine Cyranka and Karoline Peisker came to the nursery every Monday between 1.30-4.30 p.m. to investigate crime scenes with the pupils in their immediate environment, in the middle of the city: What is going on in the city? How do people behave at the tram stop, like cyclists or dog owners? What does the greengrocer sell and where does he get his apples? The Francke Foundations' facilities with collections, libraries and university faculties offer a unique field of activity for this: what do the staff write at their desks? What do they talk about in the refectory? What do they carry in their pockets? What are they doing in the chapel?

Everywhere the children asked questions and recorded information. As illustrated research, the observations were recorded in sketches using various graphic means and then processed into illustrations using a variety of artistic techniques. An exhibition is planned as a result of the project.
