Donations for the preservation of cultural treasures
Whether it is the restoration of a magnificent Koran manuscript or the renovation of the luminous Nicodemus painting in the Chamber of Curiosities – individual donations enable the important preservation of the collection in the custodial and study centre of the Francke Foundations.
This is also the case with the world atlas with colour-illustrated maps from the workshop of the famous Amsterdam map printer Johannes Janssonius (1588–1664).
The atlas is one of his major works. Two of the parchment volumes decorated with gold were damaged in the spine area. In order not to damage the maps, which are still in very good condition, and to be able to present the atlases in exhibitions again, the covers had to be repaired and the binding partially renewed. The volumes contain maps of the seven seas as well as maps of the Iberian Peninsula, Asia and Africa. Generous private donations from various regions of Germany were received by the Friends of the Francke Foundations Association. Volume 1 of 2 has now been restored to its former glory and returned to the library of the Francke Foundations.
