The Francke Foundations

Today, there are many exhibitions at the Francke Foundations.

The Francke Foundations still care for children today.
For example, the Francke Foundations have:

  • Kindergartens and schools
  • Sports halls
  • A youth club

The Francke Foundations also have a large library.
Many researchers work there.
Researchers are people who investigate something in detail.
The researchers come from all over the world.
They read old books and old letters in the library.
This is how they learn more about August Hermann Francke.
August Hermann Francke was a theologian.
A theologian is someone who knows a lot about God and the church.
He helped poor children.
The researchers also learn a lot about the history of the Francke Foundations.

Other experts also work at the Francke Foundations.
For example:

  • Experts from Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg
  • Experts from the German Federal Cultural Foundation
  • Experts from the German Youth Institute

The Francke Foundations are something special in the world.
That is why the Francke Foundations want to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
UNESCO World Heritage status means:
The whole world considers the Francke Foundations to be very important.

The Francke Foundations receive money for their work.
The money comes from the federal government.
And the money comes from the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Who was August Hermann Francke?

August Hermann Francke lived over 300 years ago.
Francke was born in the city of Lübeck
and died in the city of Halle an der Saale.

Francke was a pastor in the Protestant Church.
People loved listening to Francke in church.
But Francke was also an educator and a teacher.

Francke said back then:
Children should learn a lot.
Then the children will have a better life later on.

Francke collected many books for teaching.
And Francke also printed books himself.
Francke's students learned a lot from the books.
And the students learned a lot from Francke.
Many of the pupils became famous people.
For example, the pupils became:

  • pastors
  • teachers
  • researchers
  • or politicians.

Francke took care of the children
in the parish of Glaucha.
Today, Glaucha is a district of Halle an der Saale.
But Francke also took care of children:

  • from all over the city of Halle
    and from all over Germany.

The Francke Foundations back then

Francke became very famous because of the orphanage.
He took care of orphans and poor children.

Orphans are children who no longer have parents.
These children live alone.

Francke had many new houses built for the children.

Thirty years later, Glaucha had:

  • new schools and new residential buildings
  • workshops and printing houses
  • gardens
  • and a pharmacy.

All of these buildings together are now called the Francke Foundations.
