Accessibility at a glance
General information on local requirements
– All rooms available to guests are accessible without steps, via ramps or lifts.
– Minimum width of 90 cm for all passageways/doors.
– Public toilet for people with disabilities.
– Assistance dogs welcome (by arrangement).
– Assistive devices in the exhibitions: audio stations, QR codes, films.
Parking spaces
Public parking spaces for people with disabilities are available in the immediate vicinity. People with a severely disabled pass may park anywhere on the premises. Please display your pass visibly behind the windscreen.

Information for people with walking disabilities and wheelchair users
All areas relevant to the test meet the quality criteria for the label ‘Accessibility tested – accessible for people with walking disabilities’. We have compiled some information on accessibility below. Detailed information can be found in the test report.
- The building is accessible without steps via the side entrance with a ramp.
- The ramp at the side entrance is 2.5 metres long and has no handrails. The maximum longitudinal slope is 12.3%.
- The lift in House 28 is at least 110 cm x 234 cm in size.
- The ticket counter in House 28 is 95 cm high. There is another, equivalent communication option available while seated.
- Most of the exhibits can be viewed while seated.
- Most of the information about the exhibits can be read while seated.
- The accessible toilet is located on the first floor of the building.
When visiting the Historic Library, please use the lift in the glass structure of the connecting building. The staff at the information centre will inform you of this when you purchase your ticket.
- The accessible toilet is located in the cafeteria of the study centre on the ground floor.
- The building is accessible without steps via the side entrance.
- The lift cabin in House 22 is at least 104 cm x 144 cm in size.
- Most of the exhibits can be viewed while seated.
- Most of the information about the exhibits can be read while seated.
The Historic Orphanage is the cultural centre of the Francke Foundations.
- You can reach all floors of the building by lift. The lift cabin in House 1 measures at least 109 cm x 210 cm.
- The building is accessible without steps via the side entrance. The barrier-free entrance is located on the south side of the building. Unfortunately, the entrance is not manned. If you press the bell to the right of the door, our colleagues will be happy to open the door for you.
- The balcony of the Historic Orphanage is not barrier-free and cannot be reached by lift.
- Most of the exhibits can be viewed while seated.
- The information about the exhibits is mostly not legible when seated.
- Public toilet for people with disabilities (House 1, Historic Orphanage, 2nd floor):
- The door to the toilet is 80 cm wide.
- The manoeuvring areas are: in front of the toilet 183 cm x 100 cm; in front of the washbasin 203 cm x 143 cm; to the left of the toilet 119 cm x 54 cm; there is no manoeuvring space to the right.
- There are grab rails to the left and right of the toilet. The grab rails can be folded up.
- The washbasin has limited wheelchair access.
- The mirror cannot be seen when seated.
- There is an alarm button.
- From Schwarzen Weg, the lift can be reached via two steps.
- Barrier-free access is only possible via the Lindenhof Courtyard. We kindly request that you register in advance.
- There is no accessible toilet in the building.
You can reach the office of the Francke Foundations via the lift at the rear of the building. Please ring the bell here and we will send the lift to the ground floor for you.
- The vaulted cellar in House 37 is accessible via the lift.
- The accessible toilet is located in the basement of the house.
The historic building complex of August Hermann Francke's 18th-century school town can be accessed via the historic Lindenhof. This is partly covered with gravel and partly with very uneven cobblestones. The roots of the trees cause severe unevenness in the surface in places. The path rises slightly towards the east. Allow a little extra time for your visit here. We recommend that you bring someone with you.
The kerbs of the footpaths at Franckeplatz are not lowered at all access points. We recommend that you bring someone with you to assist you.
Schwarzer Weg
The kerbs of the footpaths are not lowered continuously at the crossings. The footpath in front of house 24 becomes very narrow due to a staircase. The terrain rises slightly towards the east. We recommend that you bring an accompanying person with you for your visit.
Information for people with hearing impairments and deaf people
- There is a clearly visible fire alarm in the buildings.
- There is no inductive hearing system.
- An outgoing emergency call in the lift is confirmed acoustically.
- Alternatively, stairs are available.
- Information about the exhibits is mainly provided in writing.
- Information about the exhibits is presented in a photorealistic manner.
- No guided tours are offered for people with hearing impairments or deaf people.

Information for visually impaired and blind people
- Assistance dogs are permitted in all relevant areas/rooms.
- Outdoor paths usually do not have visually contrasting or tactile kerbs (longitudinal slopes of up to 12% are present).
- The entrances are designed with high visual contrast.
- All areas that are raised and accessible to guests are well lit, i.e. bright and glare-free.
- The signage is designed in easily legible, high-contrast lettering.
- An outgoing emergency call in the lift is confirmed acoustically. The stopping position is not announced by voice. The controls are mostly designed to be visually contrasting and tactile.
- Alternatively, stairs are available.
- Stair steps are not designed to be visually contrasting.
- Stairs have at least one handrail on one side.
- The exhibits are generally well lit.
- Information about the exhibits is mainly provided in writing and is usually designed with high visual contrast.
- There is audio information about the exhibits.
- There are no guided tours for visually impaired and blind people.
- Information is not available in Braille or prismatic writing.

Information for guests with cognitive impairments
- We have compiled some information on accessibility below. Detailed information can be found in the test report.
- The names and logos of the buildings are clearly visible from the outside.
- The destinations of the paths are within sight or there are path markers at a constantly visible distance.
- No information in easy language is available on site.
- Information about the exhibits is mainly provided in writing, but not in easy-to-read language.
- Information about the exhibits is presented in a photorealistic manner.
- No guided tours are offered for people with cognitive impairments.
- Information is not presented using pictograms or images.

Our website offers information about the Francke Foundations in easy-to-read language. Together with partners in the region, we plan to expand this service to our exhibitions in the future. We will keep you informed here.
