Guided tour: The blowpipe from the Borneo collection

Historic Orphanage

This short guided tour focuses on the blowpipe from the Borneo collection. It was sent to Halle in the 1840s, along with around 110 other objects, by the missionaries Heinrich Julius Berger (1800–1845) and Johann Michael Carl Hupe (1818–1861). Discover fascinating details about this special treasure from the Cabinet of Artefacts and Natural Curiosities.

Guided tour: Human remains in the Cabinet of Artefacts and Natural Curiosities

Historic Orphanage

In the Francke Foundations’ Cabinet of Artefacts and Natural Curiosities, humans are classified alongside animals. For this reason, the animal cabinet contains a number of objects made from human remains, such as foetuses preserved in alcohol, bladder stones and an anatomical wax model. In this short guided tour, we present the latest research findings on these objects and explain their place within the 1741 collection.

Guided tour: Listening to the sea ear. Exploring a sea snail in the Cabinet of Artefacts and Natural Curiosities

Historic Orphanage

What stories emerge when we listen to the abalone and come to see wonder as something intrinsically linked to a sense of responsibility towards the world? As we trace the lineage of the abalone, the cultural, ecological and colonial interconnections of this sea snail become apparent. The pāua in the shell cabinet serves as a starting point for asking how the meanings and symbolism of these marine creatures shift across cultural contexts – and what that reveals about our relationship with nature.
