Globalisation and Progress. Lecture by Prof. Dr Sebastian Conrad

Auditorium Löwengebäude, Universitätsplatz 10

From the Enlightenment to the Communist Manifesto to the visions of a »flat world« in the 1990s, talk of the world growing closer together was never merely a statement of fact, never merely a descriptive observation. Rather, it was often linked to a promise of progress. The process of increasing global integration was seen as unstoppable and irreversible. At the same time, many understood it as a change for the better, as part of overcoming supposedly backward traditions. Furthermore, the global historical perspective itself was linked to an assumption of progress: insight into global interdependencies was credited with the potential to enable a more just global order.

What remains of these promises in an age that has taken up the banner of »disconnection«? Was there ever any truth to them – wasn't the promise of progress always a smokescreen that concealed power imbalances? And how can world history be written under the auspices of deglobalisation and decoupling?
