For centuries, boarding schools shaped the educational and social lives of many children and young people. As places of upbringing, control, education and everyday life, they raise a variety of questions – for example, about educational concepts, social milieus, disciplinary practices, gender roles and material culture. The workshop invites participants to examine boarding schools in German-speaking countries from the 19th to the 20th century from a historical and educational history perspective.
The workshop understands boarding schools as historically variable forms of institutional accommodation and education for children and young people – including classic boarding schools as well as alumnates, convicts and colleges. Researchers at all career stages who deal with the diversity and change of these forms of accommodation and education in the German-speaking context are invited to participate.
