Turbans and ceremonial robes – the fascination of the Ottoman Empire

The cabinet containing »items belonging to clothing« in the Cabinet of Artefacts and Natural Curiosities houses several Turkish objects. The painting on the cabinet top shows a turban, a shirt and boots. Inside are a turban captured in Belgrade in 1717 and a »Turkish dress of honour« from a delegation to Constantinople. The garments bear witness to the Holy Roman Empire's relations with the Ottomans between war and diplomacy. Ruth Egger, a historian at the University of Tübingen, is researching these artefacts, which have received little attention to date.
