Together for artistic freedom and a democratic culture of remembrance

We support today’s joint statement by Saxony-Anhalt’s cultural foundations and cultural institutions regarding the AfD’s announced ‘patriotic cultural policy’. The party’s plans to align art, culture and historical remembrance with nationalist ideals should it come to power constitute an attack on artistic freedom, the openness of cultural institutions and the culture of remembrance rooted in democracy.

Together with the signatories, we emphasise: cultural policy must not be misused for the nationalistic instrumentalisation of history and culture. Cultural policy must protect the diversity of cultural expressions and promote a culture of remembrance grounded in democratic values. Only in this way can we preserve Saxony-Anhalt’s vibrant cultural landscape and strengthen social cohesion.
