Beschreibung
In his handbook "Principles of Education and Teaching" (Grundsätze der Erziehung und des Unterrichts), August Hermann Niemeyer called for the establishment of school libraries in all Prussian schools. The first library open to pupils was the Oratory Library of the Royal Pädagogium in Halle. "Once a week, following the advice and the direction of theirs teachers, pupils can borrow a book to read" (1820). Today, the Oratory Library is almost entirely accessible in the Foundations Library. It houses numerous first editions of German poetry by Wieland, Goethe, Schiller, Kleist, Novalis, Seume and other authors from around 1800.
