The Francke Foundations´School Garden
The Beginnings of School Garden Teaching in Germany
More than 300 years ago August Hermann Francke laid out a school garden, the first of its kind in Germany. It was an integral part of the instruction in natural sciences (Realien), the concept of which was based on practicality and clarity. Today the terraced garden (Pflanzgarten) on the grounds of the Francke Foundations’ former kitchen garden (Küchengarten) not only revives this tradition but also takes up Francke’s ideas on natural scientific instruction through practical experience that he applied so successfully.
The Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt and the Operational Programme of the European Science Foundation of the European Union both support the project “Environmental Education in the School Garden of the Francke Foundations’ in Halle/Salle” (Umweltbildung im Lehrgarten der Franckeschen Stiftungen zu Halle/Saale). In this context, the school garden is the starting point in the Francke Foundations with regard to instructing children and young people on how to deal with the environment in a responsible manner. The garden and the greenhouses are used jointly with the Institute for School Paedagogics and Primary School Didactics of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
A Voluntary Ecological Year (Freiwilliges ökologisches Jahr, FÖJ) offers young people the opportunity to actively engage in preserving nature. This is a hands-on opportunity to become acquainted with numerous challenges in the field of environmental protection and to gain a better understanding of the complex interrelations of our ecosystems in order to communicate this knowledge to others.
A Voluntary Ecological Year can be absolved between 16 and 26 years of age. The applicant should have an interest in ecological subjects as well as in working with nature and the environment.
What are the tasks?
Apart from helping to maintain the garden as well as to harvest and process the produce cultivated there, activities in the school garden include assistance in events relating to environmental education for children, especially the supervision of preschool and school children during their work in the garden. Another key point is the preparation of teaching materials for environmental education and public relations work as well as providing assistance in organising environmental project days and festivities.
