International relations between the Halle Orphanage, the Kingdom of Hungary and the Principality of Transylvania during the 18th century

Date: 18-20 October 2018
Venue:
Historic Orphanage of the Francke Foundations, Halle (Saale), Germany
Organisers:
Dr. Britta Klosterberg, Prof. Dr. Holger Zaunstöck and Friederike Lippold, M.A.

In 1698, August Hermann Francke (1663-1727) founded an orphanage and a school system in front of the gates of Halle in Brandenburg, Germany, which still stands today as a living symbol of Halle Pietism. The Halle Orphanage and the University of Halle were well connected with much of Europe during the 18th century and this network included the Kingdom of Hungary and the Principality of Transylvania. The founder of Pietism in Hungary, András Torkos (1669-1737), studied with August Hermann Francke in Halle at the advice of Philipp Jakob Spener (1635-1705). Especially noteworthy is the work of Mátyás Bél (1684-1749), who studied in Halle from 1704 to 1708 and remained active as a parish pastor, a school principal and a noted scholar in Pressburg (now Bratislava) for many years.

The conference, taking place in the fall of 2018, will discuss the manifold interconnections between Halle Pietism, the Kingdom of Hungary and the Principality of Transylvania. Of key interest are devoutness, scholarship, music culture, book culture, and education. The conference invites contributions both from established research projects and from more recent development projects.

The conference will focus on the following research topics and questions:

1. Networks:
    a. Initiated from Halle to the Kingdom of Hungary and the Principality of Transylvania
    b. Living environments of students from Hungary and Transylvania in Halle
2. The transfer and transformation of educational concepts and practices in Hungary and Transylvania
3. The influence of Halle Pietism on religious music culture in Hungary and Transylvania
4. Literature and book culture in the context of Pietist actors in Hungary and Transylvania
5. Pietist traditions and mutual interaction in the archives, libraries and museum collections of Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Romania.

The organisers invite scholars, especially from Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, to present their current research projects and results in order to discuss them in a historic environment.

Paper suggestions with a title and an abstract (max. 300 words) can be submitted until 28 March 2018 to:
