Latina August Hermann Francke music department
Room for developing musical talent
The Music Department of the August Hermann Francke Grammar School Latina is the continuation of the former Halle Special School of Music. Here musically talented children are trained in a highly qualified manner regardless of their social background. Tuition as to their main instrument plays an equally important role as do ensemble and group lessons in ear training, music theory, improvisation, choral singing, orchestra and musicology. The training on offer covers all orchestral instruments, piano is taught as a major and minor subject. Tuition is provided by specially trained paedagogues as well as by musicians of the Staatskapelle Halle. The special feature about this education is that the diverse music classes are integrated into the grammar school’s general curriculum.
The students of the Music Department are presented with diverse performance opportunities and are prepared for competitions and concerts. The success of this programme is not in the least proven by the numerous prizes awarded at “Jugend musiziert” on the federal level, at international music competitions and at other performance comparisons. As all major and minor subjects required for a study of music are on offer in the Music Department, the graduates of the Latina are fully prepared for a professional education at a conservatory. Even those who, after completing their education at the Music Department, opt for another path through life than that of a musician benefit from the social skills acquired by performing as an ensemble, the intensive study of music, performance training and personality training.
