The cradle of academic paedagogy in Germany
The history of paedagogy as a science at the University of Halle began with the appointment of Ernst Christian Trapp to the first German Chair for Paedagogy in 1779. Over time, a traditional faculty developed, the Faculty of Philosophy III, Education, which enjoys a high reputation in the German academic landscape. This is demonstrated not least by the repeated top spot in the nationwide CHE ranking.
In four institutes – paedagogy, school paedagogy and primary school didactics, rehabilitation paedagogy as well as Roman Catholic theology and its didactics – various courses in the field of teacher training and of the main subject, educational science, are available. These courses are characterized by a challenging doctrine and a vibrant research culture.
Educational science in Halle has a broad research profile. The results are not only of great relevance to educational science in general, but also to the region and the study itself, which is characterized by the close link between research and teaching. Symposiums, lecture series and scholarly events, which are also presented in cooperation with the Francke Foundations, express this vibrant study and research culture.
