On 30 October 2022, the Buchhandlung des Waisenhauses was awarded the German Bookshop Prize in the category »Outstanding Bookshop« by the State Minister for Culture and Media, Claudia Roth, at Augsburg City Hall.
The German Bookshop Prize recognises small, owner-managed bookshops that offer a sophisticated and varied literary range as well as a cultural events programme, pursue innovative business models and are committed to promoting reading and literature for children and young people.
The traditional book location on Franckeplatz on the corner of Steinweg has only been called Buchhandlung des Waisenhauses again since September 2021, continuing a tradition of over 300 years that began in 1698 with August Hermann Francke. Despite the Corona pandemic, bookseller Nils Wagner has created a modern book place that offers children, parents and grandparents, students, academics or the simply curious an extensive range of novels, children's books, regional literature and specialist literature in the humanities. It enriches Halle's cultural life with many events and offers.
The Francke Foundations congratulate Nils Wagner and his staff on this remarkable award!
