The Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for Prof. Dr. Thomas Müller-Bahlke

On 7 May 2026, Minister-President Sven Schulze presented Prof. Dr Thomas Müller-Bahlke with the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany at the State Chancellery in Magdeburg.

The award recognises his exceptional commitment to culture, science and social participation. Over more than three decades, Müller-Bahlke has had a decisive influence on the development of the Francke Foundations – initially as Head of the Archive (1992–2002) and from 2003 to 2025 as Director. With great passion and foresight, he developed the Francke Foundations »into a centre for culture, science and social participation that is unique in Europe«, according to the citation for the award. Through his commitment, he established networks for the Foundations at local, national and international levels and promoted historical awareness and democratic principles among the general public.

Many initiatives, projects and partnerships that are now naturally associated with the Francke Foundations can be traced back to his initiative and will have a lasting impact on cultural and social life in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt and beyond.
