The group "Weltentdecker" at Stichelsdorf

a day that was sustainable both metaphorically and literally

As part of a special field trip, the preschoolers had the opportunity to visit Stiftsgut Stichelsdorf as the first group from their daycare center. Once there, they first explored the play area, which featured tubes, a zip line, and various climbing structures. This was followed by a brief introduction at the campfire site, where the children were given an overview of the day’s program. This was followed by a guided tour of the grounds. During the tour, the children not only got to know the various animals on the farm—including rabbits, pot-bellied pigs, sheep, and chickens—but were also allowed to feed them dandelions or crispbread on their own. Another focus was on hands-on engagement with food. During the tour, the children gathered and harvested ingredients for their shared lunch. Wild garlic, Swiss chard, and parsnips were collected in baskets and then chopped up by the children along with carrots and potatoes. Over an open fire, these were turned into a fresh vegetable soup. At the same time, the children explored the topic of sustainability creatively by designing bird feeders from empty milk cartons. These were filled with natural materials such as sticks and straw, as well as seeds. After another play session, during which a spontaneous game of “ball over the string” developed, the children tasted the soup they had prepared themselves, which was a big hit. Before heading back, they made the most of the play areas one last time. Even on the bus, the children were already excitedly sharing their experiences and talking about the moments that had left the strongest impression on them—a clear sign that the day had been a complete success.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the entire team at Stiftsgut Stichelsdorf for their dedicated organization of this varied and educationally valuable field trip. It stood out for its balanced combination of physical activity, nature experiences, and sustainable learning.
