Pious Feelings. Images and Texts in Books of Pietism

Cabinet exhibition in the Historical Library

The piety movement of Pietism sensitised the faithful to trace their attitude towards God within themselves and to bear witness to it in the community. The reading of pious writings aimed to strengthen individual religious feeling and guide the faithful to a pious, moral life. Titles such as Heavenly Kiss of Love or Divine Flame of Love already appealed to the senses and feelings of the readers.

The exhibition uses selected examples to show which feelings were to be awakened when looking at the illustrations and reading the edifying writings.
