The Beginnings of School Garden Teaching in Germany

More than 300 years ago August Hermann Francke laid out a school garden, the first of its kind in Germany. It was an integral part of the instruction in natural sciences (Realien), the concept of which was based on practicality and clarity. Today the terraced garden (Pflanzgarten) on the grounds of the Francke Foundations’ former kitchen garden (Küchengarten) not only revives this tradition but also takes up Francke’s ideas on natural scientific instruction through practical experience that he applied so successfully.

The Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt and the Operational Programme of the European Science Foundation of the European Union both support the project “Environmental Education in the School Garden of the Francke Foundations’ in Halle/Salle” (Umweltbildung im Lehrgarten der Franckeschen Stiftungen zu Halle/Saale). In this context, the school garden is the starting point in the Francke Foundations with regard to instructing children and young people on how to deal with the environment in a responsible manner. The garden and the greenhouses are used jointly with the Institute for School Paedagogics and Primary School Didactics of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
