   Muhlenberg Tercentenary 2011

Henry Melchior Muhlenberg (1711-1787).
Patriarch of the North American Lutheran Church

Halle Pietism played a highly influential role in North American church religious history. Early connections were extended in particular during the tenure of the second director of the Francke Foundations, Gotthilf August Francke (1696-1769). From 1728 onward, many Protestants from Salzburger Land, who had to moved to Prussian Brandenburg after being expelled, left Prussian Brandenburg for the newly founded colony of Georgia. The Francke Foundations sent pastors, who remained in contact with Halle, to join them.

In 1734 the German Lutherans in Pennsylvania asked their contact in London, Frederick Michael Ziegenhagen, to find trained pastors. Ziegenhagen contacted Gotthilf August Francke, who, in 1742, sent Heinrich Melchior Mühlenberg to America, where he created a nationwide church organisation. Mühlenberg is now regarded as the patriarch of the Lutheran church in North America. Two of his sons, trained in Halle, were to become key figures in the early history of the United States.

You and your colleagues should be very proud of the outcome! The panels tell the story clearly and succinctly, the text is very legible, and the overall layout and color palette is very appealing. Very well done, indeed!
