The Francke Foundations, founded in 1698, are a living cultural and scholarly institution of European scale. More than 25 educational, social and cultural institutions are gathered on a campus of 16 hectares in the heart of the city. They include a baroque library from 1728, school buildings from four centuries, the largest half-timbered house in Europe, as well as the only cabinet of Art and Curiosities still in its original setting from the Baroque period. Lectures, concerts, guided tours and cultural-historically exhibitions take place in the Historical Orphanage built from 1698 to 1700. The Foundations as a historical ensemble are a candidate for the title of UNESCO world heritage site.
