From 1991-92 on, the scientific training of prospective teachers in Saxony-Anhalt at universities and colleges follows the school praxis oriented education as presented at state colleges and training schools in a now 16-month traineeship. The central task of the colleges entails the teacher training as to all teaching careers within the framework of the second phase of teacher training (preparatory service) as well as participating in the organisation and the conducting of career exams, for the implementation of which the state examination board is responsible. The Saxony-Anhalt State Institute considers itself an interface in which theory and practice of teaching interlock. Through learning while at work vocational skills are developed which, in collaboration with college leaders and school leaders as well as mentors at the training schools, are professionally supervised depending upon school forms, subjects and disciplines.
The predominant part of the academic teacher training in Saxony-Anhalt is currently assembled at the site where August Hermann Francke founded the “Seminarium Praeceptorum” in 1696. This was the first teacher training institute in Germany, which is considered the start of professional teacher training in this country. In addition to the Faculty of Educational Sciencesat the University of Halle, they comprise the State Teaching Training Institute Halle and the State Examination Office for Teaching Positions, two bodies of the Saxony-Anhalt State Institute for School Quality and Teacher Training (Landesinstitut für Schulqualität und Lehrerbildung Sachsen-Anhalt, LISA).
