The impulse to found the Spielehaus e.V. was not only to encounter but also to come to a closer understanding of various international, national and regional cultures through the medium of games and play. It was opened to the public in the Great Barn (Große Scheune) within the former agricultural complex of the Francke Foundations in 1993. In close collaboration with the Foundations, a meeting place for children, teenagers and adults from different social and educational backgrounds was created here.

In line with the founding idea, the collection comprises more than 300 games from all corners of the world, some peculiar, some long forgotten: parlour games, board games, individual games, card games and many more. A small library enhances the collection. The Games House is open daily from the early afternoon on. Use of the games is free of charge in order to give all kinds of visitors access.

In addition, the House of Games organises numerous projects to familarise young and old with games as a cultural asset, thereby acquiring their own experiences. These events have now become one of the cultural highlights in the Francke Foundations, the city of Halle and with numerous partner institutions throughout Saxony-Anhalt.

The Games House is recognised as a place for internship and practical work for students of child education and of social paedagogy.
