The Branch Library at the IZEA

The Branch Library of Saxony-Anhalt’s University and State Library (ULB) at the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Enlightenment Studies (IZEA) was opened in 1998. Modeled on the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel the library originated in combination with the founding of an international research centre. The research centre and library were housed in the former Red School (Rote Schule), the Höhere Töchterschule, which was renovated thanks to substantial funding from the Volkswagen Foundation.

Library Collection

The freehand collection currently comprises approximately 42.736 volumes, including source editions, bibliographies, handbooks and research literature concerning the European Enlightenment, with 20.000 volumes of primary literature coming out of the stacks of the University and State Library (ULB) onto the shelves at the IZEA. In addition to European philosophy and literature dating from the Age of Enlightenment in the original, the main focus lies on science and scholarship, with the works of professors serving the university between 1690 and 1806 also to be found here.

Opening hours

During the academic semester, the library is open from Monday to Thursday, 10.00-20.00, on Friday from 10.00-16.00.
