Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg

The Centre for School and Educational Research (ZSB) is an interdisciplinary scientific centre of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg founded and named the Centre for School and Teacher Training Research (ZSL) in May 1994. During the first years of its existence it was a research institute as well as a centre for advice on and coordination of issues concerning the training of teachers. More recently its tasks have shifted ever more clearly towards fundamental educational research. From the start the methodology profile of the ZSB included a qualitative focus, complemented by quantitative studies and a triangulation of methods.

The research profile of the ZSB is based on  three pillars. The first is research into schools and school development, tuition and didactics, and teachers. The second seeks to connect research into education and schools with research into childhood and adolescence, including non-school fields and informal education. The third comprises research into organisations and professions as well as their link to paedagogical fields of work.

The centre aims at clustering projects and intensifying cooperation in order to process selected research areas in an interdisciplinary manner. Thus, in October 2011, a research group on "Mechanisms of Elite Formation in the German Educational System," funded by the German Research Foundation DFG, began its work. In six projects this research group analyses processes of the construction and creation of excellence in key educational institutions and locations in Germany ranging from kindergarten to university. In addition, the group examines the importance of the increasing competition between educational institutions for the addressees of education as well for professionals. The project "Individualisation and Control: A Praxeological Study of Open Tuition in the Primary School" is yet another ZSB project dedicated to highly topical and relevant paedogogical issues.

As neighbours in the Francke Foundations’ grounds the ZSB can intensively collaborate with the Department of Educational Sciences and the educational institutes established in Houses 2-7.  As indicated by the example of the now traditional Halle Evening Talks on Schools and Education (Hallesche Abendgespräche zu Schule und Bildung), the ZSB is also open to the interested professional public and all those who wish to join the discussions.
